Notable New York Shows Tonight: Man Man, Frances Cone

Two shows New Yorkers are encouraged to see tonight:
For the downtown crowd, the singer-songwriter stage at Rockwood Music Hall will feature Frances Cone, along with her usual band and some guests from the local acoustic folk label Handsome Lady. Earlier this week, Cone released “Come Back,” a debut album casting the vocalist’s intent confessionals with a fine balance of tangy Americana and soul-inspired flourish.
Meanwhile, across the East River, at Music Hall of Williamsburg, Philadelphia’s cracked-folk contingent Man Man will headline a bill featuring Murder By Death and Samantha Crain. For this tour—set to end on home turf this Saturday—the band enlisted two new members, Brooklyn multi-instrumentalists Bryan Murphy and Adam Schatz (profiled in our recent issue’s “Leaders of The Pack” story). Like Man Man’s four core members they’ve taken honorary names: Shono Murphy and Brown Sugar, respectively. Look for them to add extra heft and vigor to songs from Man Man’s fidgety 2011 LP “Life Fantastic”—perhaps even some new material bound for the still-unannounced follow-up.
